7 Best Filmmaking Courses in 2022 (Beginners and Intermediate) (2022)

If you’re an aspiring filmmaker, the easiest way to get good is through watching Youtube videos, but the fastest is enrolling in a course.

The reason why I love taking courses is the same reason why I love reading books. You get to learn the things other people learn from experiences that you may never have.

Say for example, Ray Roman’s experience with the Photographer that made him rework his branding and pricing, that’s something that I may never experience.

But him telling me that. It made me decide that I should use my name for exclusivity. This gave me more opportunities to make more money.

That simple knowledge from Ray Roman, improved my income drastically. What more if I take more brains into mine?

Courses are shortcuts. People give their best in the course to satisfy the paying clients who are ready to refund in case they’re not.

If the course doesn’t provide a refund and you don’t know the maker, watch out.

So which course?

There are tons of filmmaking courses out there.

In my pursuit to master filmmaking, I have taken a lot of filmmaking courses and I’m going to recommend the best ones I took. These are the courses that will give you tips and tricks that aren’t seen on Youtube and blogs.

There are a lot of courses that I regret taking because I already knew them just from watching vlogs of filmmakers.

What I want in a course are the following:

  • I want the course to take me to another level in filmmaking.
  • I want the course to offer tips that aren’t seen on other courses.
  • The instructor should be legit. (Highly paid for their works)
  • They should teach, not only the technical side, but also the creative side.
  • Applicable with the gears I already have.

In case you’re wondering why a popular course isn’t included here, they fail to satisfy at least one of the things mentioned above.

Say, for example, Shane Hurlbut’s courses. They are so awesome and really legit! But, I won’t recommend them. Because even I won’t buy those lighting gears he’s using. I don’t have that much crew like him.

Shane Hurlbut’s courses are for people who are aspiring Hollywood Cinematographers. The courses I’d recommend are for Video Production Companies or for solo video creators.

Here are the top 7 best filmmaking courses:

Cinema Mastery by Eric Thayne

7 Best Filmmaking Courses in 2022 (Beginners and Intermediate) (1)

Cinema Mastery is the 8th filmmaking course I took but it’s my number 1 recommended filmmaking course.

(Video) AWS Tutorial For Beginners | AWS Full Course - Learn AWS In 10 Hours | AWS Training | Edureka

The main reason is that Eric Thayne will teach you not to become just a videographer, but a real cinematographer.

If you don’t know the difference, you can refer to my article Videographer vs Cinematographer.

To simplify it, Cinematographers understand the language of films. They know how people will feel if they shoot a scene in a certain way. They communicate through the film to their audience.

The videographer is the one who shoots and executes what the cinematographer envisions.

Being just a videographer doesn’t give you an edge among all the videographers in your area. You’re just another camera guy who will shoot their birthday party in a visually appealing way.

There’s nothing wrong with that if that’s your goal.

However, if you learn cinematography, you’ll create films that do not just please the eye. You’ll produce films that touch people’s hearts.

That’s why the name of this website is BeyondTheSight.

Eric Thayne is a Cinematographer and Director who runs his own production company, CLEDORA.

He decided to create courses and teach everything he knows from basics, lighting, composition, cinematography, post-production, etc.

All of these are included in his Cinema Mastery Course but he also has courses that focus on lighting and video editing. These are Lighting Secrets and ProEditor, respectively.

He has free training here: Cinema Mastery Free 1-Hour Training

Master The Moment by Ray Roman

7 Best Filmmaking Courses in 2022 (Beginners and Intermediate) (2)

If you’re a pure wedding videographer or, at least, you want to be, this is a must-take course.

Ray Roman is one of the highest and one of the best wedding videographers in the world. He films weddings in different countries. For his time alone, you’ll have to pay around $10,000 at the time I watched the course (2019).

Ray Roman will guide you through showing you how it’s actually done in a real wedding.

He will teach you how to take what he calls “Eye-Candy” shots to not have any boring time in the film.

He will teach how to direct the couples to get really amazing shots.

He will teach you his post-production process that will make your film look high-end.

He will teach you how to price your work and show you how he does his.

He will teach you everything he knows.

Freelance Colorist by Waqas Qazi

7 Best Filmmaking Courses in 2022 (Beginners and Intermediate) (3)

I’m a big fan of color grading. For me, it’s the most fun part of filmmaking. I feel like a child using crayons.

Of all the color grading courses, Waqas Qazi is the one that didn’t bore me and he taught everything I wanted to know.

And the best thing about his course is, in case you decide on becoming a Freelance Colorist, he will teach you how to make big money from it, step by step.

What he taught wasn’t easy but is very possible if you’re really willing to do the hard work.

Waqas Qazi worked for popular brands like Lexus. He’s a master of this craft and that’s where you’d want to learn from – the masters.

I like learning from people who specialize in a specific field and this guy is a color grading specialist.

He knows how to grade everything, from commercials to films.

He can even copy famous color grades in Hollywood films which he will also show how in this course.

Wedding Video Master Class by Philip White

7 Best Filmmaking Courses in 2022 (Beginners and Intermediate) (4)

This guy is a genius! He is the reason behind my minimalist style of filmmaking.

He brings no lighting equipment, he uses 1 prime lens 95% of the time, the Samyang 85mm, and he captures candid moments from a distance.

(Video) Sony a7R V vs Canon R5 vs Sony a7R IV: Best high-resolution camera!

That is my style right there.

I don’t like setting up people for a pose. I don’t like them being aware that I’m filming them. They overact and it doesn’t look good on the screen.

His style focuses more on making most of what’s currently available. He utilizes the available natural light. He uses glasses, windows, or mirrors to create more visually appealing images.

He’s one of my greatest influences and I’m thankful I took his course.

Maybe this is not for you if you’re a video production company owner.

This is perfect for solo videographers.

Posing Courses by Lindsay Adler

7 Best Filmmaking Courses in 2022 (Beginners and Intermediate) (5)

Lindsay Adler is one of the best photographers and instructors I’ve seen. She teaches all her techniques in CreativeLive. Beginner filmmakers don’t understand how important posing your subjects is.

These are the benefits of mastering poses for filmmaking:

  • It will increase the production level of your videos dramatically
  • You’ll have the power to make your subjects look their best
  • It’ll give your more options to play with and never run out of ideas during the shoot

For wedding films, portrait videos, music videos, and other types of videos where the main purpose is to make the subject look great, posing is very important.

Even if I’m making a short film, knowing how to pose my subjects gives me better ideas on how to get great composition in my scenes.

Music Editing Mastery by FilmEditingPro

7 Best Filmmaking Courses in 2022 (Beginners and Intermediate) (6)

Adding music to a video I shot was one of the most magical feelings I had. Then, I realized movies have background music all throughout the films too.

Before my learning about films. I never really noticed all those background music in films.

Now, I can’t live without it.

Films are 50% music.

(Video) Mock the Week Season 21 Episode 6 (28 October 2022) | A Look Back, Part 1

If you master sound design, you’ll be able to guide people on to how they should feel.

FilmEditingPro has really amazing courses on film editing, such as The Secrets of Creative Editing, Film Editing Mastery, and Trailer Editing Mastery.

The reason why I didn’t put them in the recommended lists is that I think the people who would benefit from this most are the Hollywood Film Editors and short film creators.

My audience in this blog is mostly wedding filmmakers, music video creators, and other social media content creators.

But if you’re into indie films, check those courses out! They have free lessons for you to check whether you’d want to continue further or not.

Music Editing Mastery course is great for all types of Filmmaking. You can implement them on your travel videos to create the feeling you want your viewers to feel. You can create a filmic style wedding video that will separate you from most wedding videographers.

Fulltime Filmmaker by Parker Walbeck

7 Best Filmmaking Courses in 2022 (Beginners and Intermediate) (7)

At first, this shouldn’t have made this list but with the addition of the other courses, this course got its spot on this list.

The reason why I was disappointed at first is that the original Fulltime Filmmaker course was a bunch of short video clips that I’ve already heard from youtube.

The title “Fulltime Filmmaker” made me expect more techniques on how to make money from filmmaking but Parker Walbeck just made a few key points on how to get there on a short video.

That disappointed me a lot.

His story on how he worked for Devin Supertramp was good but not every single people can have the opportunity to work for a famous creator and part ways once he got the skills and network.

With the addition of the other courses, I think your money will be more worth it, especially he has 60% for your Adobe subscription which I enjoy right now.
